1. the artist and the run
The artist matters most, and their signature run matters more: Jack Kirby's Fantastic Four, John Romita's Amazing Spider-Man, Neal Adams's Batman, Frank Miller's Daredevil, Todd McFarlane's Spider-Man. The same artist's work on a lesser title can sell for a fraction.
2. cover, splash or interior
Covers usually lead, followed by splash pages, then interior pages. Pin-ups and back covers sit in between depending on content.
3. what's on the page
- The title character, in as many panels as possible
- Action — a fight, a leap, a punch — over talking heads
- A major villain
- Story importance: first appearances, deaths, new costumes, famous moments
4. inker, completeness and condition
The inker can move a page's value by thousands. Original lettering, logos and paste-ups should be intact. Toning is expected on 1960s and 1970s boards, but stains, tears, missing stats and heavy tape reduce value — and any restoration should be disclosed.
5. provenance
Art that can be traced — from the artist, a known collection or a documented sale — is easiest to sell. Publisher stamps, artist notes and old receipts all help.
