How to Tell a First Print from a Reprint
Many famous keys have been reprinted — some so faithfully that owners don't realize their "Amazing Spider-Man #1" is a later copy. Here's how to check before you buy, sell or grade.

check these first
- The indicia — the small print on the first page or inside cover. Later printings often say "second printing" or show a later date
- The cover price and date box — reprints frequently carry a different price than the original
- The cover itself — many reprints add "2nd printing," "facsimile" or a series logo
- The barcode area — a modern UPC on a 1960s cover is a giveaway
- Size and paper — some reprints are larger, smaller or printed on bright modern stock
common reprints that fool people
| Golden Record reprints | 1960s | Comic-and-record sets that reprinted early Marvel keys, including Amazing Spider-Man #1 |
| Famous First Edition | 1970s | Oversized DC tabloid reprints of books like Action Comics #1 and Detective Comics #27; the outer cover was sometimes removed, making them look like originals |
| Marvel Milestone Editions | 1990s | Reprints of Silver and Bronze Age keys with the original covers |
| Facsimile Editions | 2019 onward | Modern reprints that copy the original cover, including the original price |
when in doubt
Measure the book, compare the indicia with a known original, and photograph front, back and the first page. Reprints can still have value, but far less than a first printing.

how to tell a first print from a reprint: questions
How do I know if my comic is a first printing?
Check the indicia, cover price, cover markings and barcode against a known first printing. Later printings are often marked, but not always.
Is a Famous First Edition worth anything?
They're collectible in their own right but worth far less than the originals they reprint.
Are facsimile editions valuable?
They're modern reprints and generally sell at modest prices.
