what makes an old comic worth money
Age alone doesn't make a comic valuable — plenty of 1970s and 1980s books are worth a few dollars. What matters is the issue, the condition and demand. The books that carry most collections are first appearances of major characters, #1 issues, origin stories, classic covers and anything from the 1940s–1960s in decent shape.
- First appearances — the debut of a character who went on to films, TV or a long-running title
- Low-numbered issues of long-running Marvel and DC series
- Golden Age (roughly 1938–1956) and Silver Age (roughly 1956–1970) books in any grade
- High-grade Bronze Age keys from the 1970s and early 1980s
- Books with original price, no tears, no missing pages and no water damage
don't clean, press or tape anything
It's tempting to fix a torn cover or flatten a curled spine. Don't. Tape, glue and home "restoration" lower value, and graders mark restored books down. Leave them as they are, keep them flat and dry, and photograph the front and back of the oldest and most interesting books.
Not sure which books matter?
Send a few box shots and the 10–20 oldest covers. We'll tell you which issues carry the value and which are common — free, no obligation. See how our appraisals work.
selling a whole box vs. picking out keys
Most old collections are a few valuable books mixed in with many common ones. We value the keys individually from recent sales and make one offer for the lot, so you don't have to sort or list anything yourself. If you only want to sell part of it, that works too.
sell old comic books: questions
Who buys old comic books?
Dealers like us, auction houses, local comic shops and individual collectors on eBay. We buy collections of any size by mail anywhere in the U.S., with a free appraisal first and a prepaid, insured overnight label if you sell.
Are my old comic books worth anything?
Check the year, the issue number and the cover. Books from the 1940s–1960s, first appearances, #1 issues and high-grade keys are where value usually is. Send photos and we'll tell you which books matter.
Do I need to get my comics graded before selling?
No. We buy raw (ungraded) books and value them from photos. For a high-value key, we'll tell you if professional grading is worth it before you sell.
How do I ship old comics safely?
Bag and board each book, pack them snugly upright in a box with no room to slide, and use the prepaid overnight label we email you. High-value insurance covers everything in transit.
