what counts as Golden Age

The Golden Age is usually dated from Action Comics #1 (1938) to the mid-1950s. It covers the first superheroes plus a wide range of war, crime, horror, romance, western and funny-animal titles. Survival rates are low, so even worn copies can have real value.

  • Superhero titles — Action, Detective, Batman, Superman, All-American, Captain America, Marvel Mystery
  • Pre-Code horror and crime from the early 1950s
  • War, western and romance titles with strong covers
  • Disney and funny-animal books in high grade

handling Golden Age books

Golden Age paper is often brittle. Handle as little as possible, keep books flat and support them on a board when you photograph them. Don't open them wide to check pages — we'll ask if we need a specific photo.

Low grade still sells

A coverless or heavily worn Golden Age key can still be worth a lot. Never throw out or "trim" an old book — send a photo first.

sell golden age comics: questions

Are Golden Age comics worth money in poor condition?

Often, yes. Scarcity means even low-grade copies of popular titles sell well.

How can I tell if my comic is Golden Age?

Check the cover price (10¢) and the indicia date inside, usually on the first page. Books dated 1938 to about 1956 are generally Golden Age.

Should I get Golden Age books graded?

For valuable issues, often yes — but ask us first. We'll tell you which ones are worth the grading fee.
