30¢ and 35¢ Price Variant Comics

In 1976 and 1977, Marvel test-marketed higher cover prices in a few regions. Those copies — 30¢ and 35¢ price variants — are much scarcer than the regular editions and command big premiums.

what they are

In 1976 Marvel printed small runs of some issues at 30¢ when the regular price was 25¢, and in 1977 it did the same at 35¢ when the regular price was 30¢. The test copies were sent to limited areas, so far fewer exist. Apart from the price, the books are the same.

how to spot one

  • Check the price in the cover corner box against the regular price for that month
  • Look at books cover-dated in mid-1976 (30¢) and mid-1977 (35¢)
  • Compare with a known regular copy — the price box is the difference
  • Beware of altered price boxes on raw copies; graded variants are labeled

well-known examples

Star Wars #1 (1977) and Iron Fist #14 (1977, first Sabretooth) are two of the most famous 35¢ variants. Many other Marvel titles from those months have variants, from big keys to ordinary issues.
